Glasgow School of Art is one of the very few remaining independent Art Schools in the United Kingdom. The School was founded in 1845 as a Government School of Design. Towards the end of the 19th century, the study and practice of the fine arts and architecture became part of the curriculum, and since then the School has blossomed and flourished, creating a proud and unique identity.
The School has occupied its present site since 1899 and at the heart of the campus is Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterwork, now known as the Mackintosh Building. Mackintosh, one of the School's former pupils, was commissioned in 1896 to design this building to provide a home for the School. It has subsequently become a place of pilgrimage for visitors from around the world but remains fundamentally a working Art School and a continued source of inspiration to those who work within it.
Glasgow School of Art comprises three schools: Architecture; Design & Craft and Fine Art; supported by the Department of First Year Studies together with the Department of Historical & Critical Studies, which are all housed in a compact campus occupying a central site within the city, affording 1400 students easy access to all of the city's facilities.
Glasgow School of Art is within ten minutes' walking distance of both rail termini, and the airport bus terminus. Glasgow International Airport is just 15 minutes from the city centre. Unique in Scotland, two other international airports, Edinburgh and Prestwick, are less than an hour away. There are direct rail links to the rest of the UK.
