The Crafts Study Centre holds most of Johnston's early work. Here for the first time we can watch his mind and understanding of the craft unfolding. In this section I will guide you through a number of his early experiments. I will comment on the sources he was looking at and on how he assessed his own work. From these experiments he distilled three fundamental principles and a series of definitions. This provides us with a basic critical framework for the analysis of lettering and will help you set clear goals to achieve in your own study. This critical framework also enables us to group various materials in the CSC calligraphy collection.
