Edward Johnston
Quotation from ´Religio medici´ by Sir Thomas Browne
C.86.9

Using material in the Crafts Study Centre collection we can trace Johnston's own learning process and see how he came to describe it in the terms set out previously.

Compare the details in these two images.(C86.9, C 86.10 details). By the standards Johnston would later set himself, this calligraphy is ghastly, but these are some of Johnston's very first experiments. They are written just two weeks apart. The first is dated 22 Nov.1897 and the second 6 Dec.1897.

Make your own list of the differences you notice between the two pieces of writing. These are some of my observations:

  • Sharpness
  • Unity - consistent weight
  • Unity - consistent pen angle
  • Unity - consistent letter shape
  •
