No 8: 'Blythburgh Church' pot, 1992 (P.92.6)

The work of John Maltby is constructed from curved slabs (or walls) of clay, forming, in this case, a simple architectural shape. This example is heavily patterned on the exterior in various ways: by abrasion and sgraffito, by drawing, trailing and painting on the surface with vitreous slips and glazes which have been coloured with oxides. A smooth, speckled dark brown glaze coats the inside. No two marks are the same and several glaze firings are necessary to produce these pots which are so full of visual references and private symbols.
