No. 18: Large flared bowl, 1990 (P.93.1)

This large lustreware bowl was made when Alan Caiger-Smith's Aldermaston Pottery was still operating at full strength, and purchased from its closing-down sale in 1990. It is made of red earthenware clay, covered with a light blue engobe, or slip, and glazed with a clear lead alkaline glaze. The brush decoration on the interior takes the form of a solid mass of leaves and berries, or fruits, worked in copper-silver reduction lustre. This sub-tropical type of pattern is in marked contrast to the delicate calligraphic strokes painted on the exterior.
