Description Joséphine Bowes, the co-founder of the Bowes Museum, trained under Karl-Josef Kuwasseg (Austrian, naturalised in France in 1870, 1802-1877), a well-known landscape painter whose work she imitated. He travelled through southern Europe and America before settling in Paris in 1830. He was a medal-winner at the Salon in 1845, 1861 and 1863. This expressive portrait was executed by Cals.

Notes Kuwasseg's life was told in Une existence d'artiste. Essai biographique sur Charles Kuwasseg, peintre, suivie de la biographie universelle, poésie, by J.-B.-H.N.-C, Paris, 1843. The artist is described thus: 'Kuwasseg n'est pas beau, comme il en convient lui-même, avec la plus naïve bonhomie, ses yeux sont petits, mais ils étincellent d'esprit et d'intelligence; mais l'ampleur de son front haut et large annonce et recèle les trésors du talent [...]' (p. 40).
