| Description | This half-length portrait of a young woman is signed by the Dutch painter Jan Portielje. The woman wears gypsy-style clothing including a decorative head scarf, fringed shawl and jewellery. Her ringed finger denotes her marital status and this portrait may have been painted to commemorate her marriage. Her costume reflects the taste in mid-nineteenth-century Europe for images of women in exotic garb. Portielje painted a number of portraits in this fashion for Dutch and American clients. | |
