A cardinal is seated at a table in a rich interior filled with antique furniture and precious objects, such as a portable triptych, a monstrance, a crucifix, a ship model hanging from the ceiling, and leather-bound books. He is admiring a small statue of the Virgin Mary, while an antiquarian and a second ecclesiastic look on. The painting reveals the artist's interest in Dutch interior scenes of the seventeenth century. Max Gaisser specialised in interiors with figures (hunters, connoisseurs, churchmen or merchants) gathering around a table. This painting is a variation on Beim Kunsthändler (private collection). |
