| Description | The Belgian painter Ceramano specialised in naturalistic landscapes and animal paintings. One of the last representatives of the Barbizon School, of which Rousseau and Millet were the leading members, he lived in Barbizon for forty years from 1870, and exhibited at the Salon in 1893, 1895 and 1897. This is a typical subject for Ceramano. | |

| Notes | The work is very dirty so that the true colours are difficult to discern. The date of 1873 is recorded in the acquisition notes, but is not now evident on the work itself. A very similar composition A Sheep Dog and his Flock was sold at Sotheby's, London on 22 November 1989. Both are large-scale works allowing for a detailed depiction of the animals. | |
