Notes The work is very dirty so that the true colours are difficult to discern. The date of 1873 is recorded in the acquisition notes, but is not now evident on the work itself. A very similar composition A Sheep Dog and his Flock was sold at Sotheby's, London on 22 November 1989. Both are large-scale works allowing for a detailed depiction of the animals.
