| Description | Almost all of Wijnant's later paintings are landscapes, particularly dunescapes based on the broad ridge of sand dunes near Haarlem. They are also usually characterised by the frequent inclusion of a blasted elm or oak tree dominating the foreground. This work however displays neither the dunes nor the motif of the dead tree and therefore certainly belongs to his earlier period in the 1660s when 'ribbon-like paths diminishing as they recede' through woodlands are the key motif. | |
