| Description | Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss was a Paris-born landscape painter who settled in England in the 1890s and became naturalized British in 1899. His British home was at Houghton House in the village of Houghton, Arundel, Sussex. He was a prolific painter of English landscapes in the style of the Barbizon School, employing loose impressionistic brushwork. Much of his work depicted the Sussex countryside. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and sold his paintings to a wide group of admirers, particularly in the United States. He was, however, perhaps better known as a great pioneer of aviation. | |
