| Description | Philip James de Loutherbourg, born in Alsace and trained in Paris, came to London in 1771 to design stage sets for the eminent actor David Garrick. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1772. Most of his later works, of which this picture is typical, were in a highly romantic style, and he published two books in 1801 and 1805 of 'Picturesque Scenery'. | |
