| Description | B. J. Blommers was the son of a lithographer, but, having attended the Hague Academy, he soon abandoned engraving for painting, and became a leading member of the Hague School. The Hague School continued the seventeenth-century Dutch tradition of painting interiors, but, rather than the light-filled rooms of Vermeer, Blommers and his contemporary Josef Israëls preferred to work in a style more inspired by the painterly ideals of Rembrandt. | |
