Description Frère was a pupil of Paul Delaroche. His genre paintings were very popular with nineteenth century buyers. His compositions evoke a simple, rural existence centred around family, mealtimes, work and prayer. The small boy sits facing the stove from which warm light emanates. The austere palette of browns and greys and the rough textures used to describe the cottage interior suggest a rustic simplicity.
