| Description | Although Fantin-Latour was associated with Manet and the Impressionist avant-garde in the 1860s and 70s, he remained essentially a painter of traditional still life and subject matter. He was greatly influenced by Symbolist painting in the latter half of his career and this is evident in L'Aurore et la Nuit. The traditional subject matter of a personified Night giving way to Day is treated with an freedom of handling that owes much to the Impressionists. However, his cosmic subject matter shows a desire to penetrate more deeply into the mysteries of nature than had the Impressionists. | |
