| Description |
This portrait of the artist's sister was rejected by the Salon of 1859 perhaps because of its simple masses and soft outlines. French academic painting still favoured clear, firm evidence of dessin. Fantin-Latour's treatment of light in terms of tone rather than colour places him apart from the Impressionists and marks him out as belonging to the earlier generation of artists upon whose experiments the Impressionists built. Fantin showed it in an exhibition in the studio of François Bonvin, the painter. |
