| Description | Colonia spent the early part of his career in his native Rotterdam before moving to London in about 1670. He established a reputation for landscapes with animals. This theme was one of his favourites. An almost contemporary biography of Colonia mentions that he copied many pictures of 'beasts' after Jacopo da Bassano (c.151 -1592) in the Royal Collection. Here, the animal group is the most vivid part of the nocturnal scene thrown into confusion by the appearance of the angel. | |
