| Description | This portrait shows the naturalism and attention to detail for which Cornelis de Vos was famous. de Vos was a Flemish painter who specialised in portraits of the burghers of Antwerp. He worked under Rubens' direction on the decorations for the ceremonial entry of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635, and on the paintings after Rubens' sketches for the decoration of the Spanish hunting lodge, the Torre de la Parada in 1637. This painting forms a pendant with 1957P32. | |

| Notes | Katlijne Van der Stighelen, Leuven University has questioned the attribution of 1957P33 and 1957P32 to de Vos (letter in gallery files, 1987). She notes that they seem to be Flemish rather than Dutch and that the poses are indeed very similar to some of de Vos' portraits. The compositional affinities seem to support an attribution to de Vos. However, the 'very soft modelling of the fundamentally white-coloured faces' of de Vos cannot be detected in these two portraits. Neither do they have the 'very fine, silk-like rendering of the hairs' typical of fall the paintings executed by de Vos. She adds that on grounds of costume, the pendants can be dated to c. 1635 - 45. | |
