| Notes | It is difficult to date this painting with any degree of certainty. Although it appears to be in the style of 19th century genre painting, it is probable that Jansen produced similar work for most of his career; with such an under-researched artist it is impossible to establish any development of style. It may be therefore be an early 20th century painting. Sir William Thom, K.B.E., of Athol House, West Park Road, Blackburn, was educated privately, then in Switzerland and Owen's College, Manchester. Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Lancashire Volunteer Artillery, he joined in 1871 and later commanded for seven years prior to 1902. A member of Chorley Rural District Council, he also served as Poor Law Guardian. Director of the Birkacre Colliery Co. Ltd. c. 1903. (Pike, W. T. ed. Lancashire at the opening of the 20th Century; Contemporary Biographies, Brighton, 1903.) |
