| Description | This painting is representative of the type of views and landscapes produced by the 'Italianates' - Dutch and Flemish painters, such as Hendrick Mommers or Jan Miel, who studied and worked in Italy during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Although some of them had influential patrons, most of the so-called Bamboccianti catered for the open market. The richly dressed young woman shopping at the stall of a street-seller was a common motif in seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish painting. Here this everyday scene is transferred to the vaguely Mediterranean setting of a piazza bathed in a soft warm light. | |
