| Title | Interior; a Peasant Woman Spinning, her Daughter Making Lace, and Conversing with a Young Man | |
| Collection | Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle | |
| Artist | French School | |
| Date Earliest | about 1790 | |
| Date Latest | about 1810 | |
| Description | In an interior scene recalling earlier Flemish paintings, the artist introduces a touch of humour. Indeed, the mother, spinning, may not be aware of the conversation going on behind her, and of the young man's position so close to her daughter. Their faces suggest they are aware of the mother's ignorance. The costumes worn by the figures suggest the painting was made around 1800. | |
