| Description | This painting is one of a number of small, vibrant sketches Cals made in the 1850s. He began painting outdoors, ‘sur le motif', at the seaports of Honfleur, Le Havre and Dieppe, settling in Honfleur after the Franco-Prussian war. He became friendly with the innovative painter Jongkind, who was to introduce Cals to Courbet, Boudin and Monet, becoming part of the group of artists who worked on the Normandy coast at this time. Cals was later to exhibit with the Impressionists between 1874 and 1879. | |

| Notes | This is no. 80m in the Bowes' 1877 mss. list. Joséphine Bowes included this painting in her list of artists living in 1866, under no. 80: La Seine à St. Ouen, and gives it a value of 60 francs. This painting is listed in the Bowes 1934 catalogue as dated 1854 and merely as River Scene The author and art critic Edmond About (1828-1885), whom Joséphine Bowes greatly admired, praised the work of Cals. He described him as the most sincere and genuine artist he had ever known. In total, Joséphine bought four paintings by Cals and is likely to have known him. |
