| Description | Very little is known about Cassinelli, but he appears to have been active between 1861 and 1869. He seems to have worked with Boudin, who he may have got his interest for the seaside from. The Bowes Museum owns several of his work, which usually represent ships, either anchored or at sea. Here the artist has succeeded in rendering a tranquil night atmosphere; the flat waters of the sea reflect the moon, giving the composition a vertical line parallel to that of the various masts represented. Activity is present, but it remains hidden under the cover of darkness. | |

| Notes | This is no. 196 in the 1877 MSS List, recorded as by Cassinelli. Cassinelli was active about 1861-69 (according to the file on him at Musée d'Orsay), hence the approximate dates given to the painting. Cassinelli was a friend of Boudin's, and it appears that the two artists took a trip together in 1860: on 15 January 1860 Boudin wrote in his diary that he 'had planned to make with Cassinelli varied seascapes'. This diary entry was found on www.galerieneffegravurehonfleur.com. The original Boudin diary is kept by the Département des Arts Graphiques at the Louvre. Cassinelli may therefore have been influenced by Boudin's work for his seascapes. Two monographs on Boudin do not however appear to mention Cassinelli: de Knyff G., Eugène Boudin raconté par lui-même, Paris, 1969, and Jean-Aubry G., Eugène Boudin d'après les lettres et les documents inédits, Neuchatel, 1968. | |
