Title A Bishop
Alternative Title Saint Thomas of Villanueva
Collection Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle
Artist Attributed to circle of Camilo, Francisco (Spanish painter, ca. 1615-1671)
Attributed to Spanish School
Date Earliest possibly about 1600
Date Latest possibly about 1860
Description This image of an unidentified ecclesiastic dressed in episcopal robes is associated with the Spanish school. It might represent Saint Thomas of Villanueva, although the attributes that he carries (the book and the episcopal robes) are too generic to support a certain identification. The format and composition suggest that the picture was possibly part of an altarpiece. It may be the work of a painter active in Madrid in the seventeenth century, possibly from the circle of Francisco Camilo. Some areas have been heavily repainted.
Current Accession Number B.M.809

Measurements 143.5 x 103 cm (estimate)

Notes

The identification of this bishop as Saint Thomas of Villanueva was proposed by Eric Young in 1988.

An attribution to the school of Madrid and, more specifically, to the circle of Francisco Camilo, was suggested by A. E. Pérez Sánchez in 1970.
