| Description | This neoclassical landscape is typical of those by Giuseppe Zais from the mid eighteenth century. Framed by trees, a foreground view of a gentle cascade opens onto a distant village set on rolling hillside. The composition creates a perspectival effect reminiscent of the paintings and engravings of his early mentor Marco Ricci, from which Zais often drew inspiration. The delicacy of the sunlight and foliage are more indicative, however, of his contact with Francesco Zuccarelli, as are the graceful sense of movement implied by the figures, the running water and the birds in the sky. | |
