Description Traditionally the five senses were represented by allegorical figures or sometimes by gallant couples of gemtlemen and ladies. Artists such as David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer depicted the five senses in a more accessible manner, with peasant characters and humour. In this scene, representing hearing, a man is shown playing a hurdy-gurdy - a traditional northern European musical instrument.

Notes Related to FA000518, FA000519, FA000520, FA000521 and forming a set of the 'Five Senses.' It would appear that these small pictures are painted on or indeed over the wing of an altar piece. A study of St Francis can be seen verso when the panels are assembled.
