| Description | Traditionally the five senses were represented by allegorical figures or sometimes by gallant couples of gemtlemen and ladies. Artists such as David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer depicted the five senses in a more accessible manner, with peasant characters and humour. In this scene, representing hearing, a man is shown playing a hurdy-gurdy - a traditional northern European musical instrument. | |
