Description Sustermans studied painting in his native Antwerp then, from 1616 on, in Paris. In 1621 he was appointed painter to the grand-ducal court at Florence, by Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621). In this capacity, he produced numerous portraits of members of the Medici family. This full length portrait depicts Cosimo II, dressed in fine black silk, with the cross of Malta on his left arm. Around his neck is a lace ruff, and behind on a plinth rests his crown.
