Description This painting appears to be a sketch for a ceiling painting showing the Virgin Mary ascending to heaven. This was a popular subject for cathedral domes: many artists depicted Mary rising up to heaven accompanied by throngs of angels. Through these compositions, worshippers can look up to experience a way to the divine. The painting has been attributed to the Venetian school, and does bear similarities to works by artists, such as Pittoni and Carlo Innocenzo Carlone. A precise attribution is complicated by the fact that such baroque compositions had also become popular in Germany and Austria by this time.
Current Accession Number 1934-062
Former Accession Number 62-34
Subject religion (Virgin Mary, Assumption)
Measurements 34.0 x 39.5 cm cm (estimate)
Material oil on canvas
Acquisition Details Purchased from Mrs T. Power 1934.
Notes On stretcher '114' (by Guido Reni?). Reverse ll round red sealing wax seal. Note in card catalogue: 'possibly by Verrio, Antonio 1639-1707 or Pittoni 1687-1767 Venetian'. Verrio worked mostly in England, suggesting he did not paint this Catholic subject. Pittoni painted several Assumptions, but they do not accord with the format of the Bradford painting. The composition is very similar, though reversed, to Carlo Carlone's fresco of the Assumption in the parish church at Groß-Siegharts, 1727, though the colours are quite different.
