| Description |
The painting depicts people returning from the Sunday morning service in the Oude Kerk in Katwijk. In 1873, when Artz was based in Paris, he spent a period in Logement De Zwaan in Katwijk together with friend and fellow-artist Kaemmerer. It was here that Artz made the first sketches for this composition. In the spring of 1874, Artz and his family moved back to The Hague, and in the same year he created this painting. |
