Description Francesco Albani (1578-1660) is quoted as having said that he took 'great delight in the divine and earthly deities, in nymphs, putti, and in graceful acts' (Malvasia, 1678). Albani studied with the Carracci and in 1617 established a large studio in Bologna. In addition to commissioned altarpieces he painted cabinet pictures with mythological themes. The putti in the Cupids at play appear in exactly the same combination in the Elements of Earth, (1625-28, Galleria Sabauda, Turin). In The Landscape Cycle of the Four Seasons(c. 1640-45, Private Collection) the same motifs were used. In the Spring the two putti with the flower garlands and basket, figure in the foreground. In the Autumn the other group is present but in reverse. This repeated use of motifs presumably based on existing sketches/models or other reference material in the studio, seems an indication that this work is a product of Albani's workshop, either by the master himself or, more likely, by one of his assistants/pupils.
