| Description | St James of Spain, dressed in his pilgrim cloak and holding his staff with his pilgrim's hat, is portrayed with St. Catherine of Alexandria, recognisable by her attributes. The painting was bought as by Taddeo Zuccaro, but is at present ascribed to the Bolognese painter Orazio Samacchini (1532-1577). However, an attribution to the circle of Samacchini's compatriot, Lorenzo Sabatini (1530-1574) seems more appropriate. Although Sabatini's early works are rooted in the same traditions as Samacchini's, during a stay in Florence working for the Medici court, he developed a Mannerist style indebted to Vasari. In 1566 he returned to Bologna where he worked until 1570 on frescoes for the Malvasia chapel, S Giacomo Maggiore, and on an altarpiece of the Virgin and Child with St Michael with Denys Calvaert, whose influence seems also present in the Glasgow painting. | |
