| Description |
Though Fantin did not specialise in painting any particular flower, it was as a painter of roses that he became best known during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Here, Fantin has placed a large bunch of roses in a rounded glass vase against a neutral pale-brown background. Many of the flowers are overblown, and despite their beauty there is and almost tangible sense of decay. |
