Description Like Millet, whom he greatly admired, Lhermitte painted scenes of rural life in which he conveyed the timeless quality of peasants working the land. Here, against a stark landscape, two men are seen turning over the soil with a plough pulled by a pair of oxen. Tackling his subject objectively and realistically, Lhermitte records the scene in faithful detail, avoiding idealisation of the workers or exaggeration of the hardship of their lives. Seen in profile, almost in procession, the figures, oxen and plough lend the scene a feeling of solemnity.
