Description Paul Cézanne, unlike the Impressionists, cared little about capturing the changes of light and atmosphere wrought on his motif. Instead, he concentrated on using colour, rather than light, to convey the underlying forms of his chosen objects. This tiny oil is one of a group of small studies of fruit painted in the late 1870s as the artist's mature style was beginning to emerge. Cézanne uses strong, blocky brushstrokes, heavily laden with paint, to describe the forms of the fruit, the straw basket and the textured surface they have spilled out on to. There is an unexpected brilliancy of colour from the juxtaposition of complementary colours, small notes of red against green on the apples, and the yellow of the orange or grapefruit against the blue of the tablecloth.
