Description In this small portrait of the Glasgow art dealer Alex Reid, Van Gogh experiments with the Pointillist technique. Although he does not use the dot-like brushstrokes of Pointillism proper, he animates the picture surface with a mass of short directional brushstrokes. The fiery quality of the red, heightened by the notes of its complementary green, gives an enigmatic and expressive power to the portrait. For a short while, during the spring and summer of 1887, Reid shared the Van Gogh brother's Montmartre apartment, and it was during this stay that he posed for two portraits by Vincent.
