| Description |
This is an faithful copy of an engraving (of 1729) by Louis Crepy of La Perspective by Watteau in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The original was painted by 1716, the background of the painting representing the garden of Pierre Crozat, a wealthy banker and principal patron of Watteau, at Montmorency outside of Paris. Watteau spent a considerable amount of time at Crozat's house and was present at such social gatherings as the one depicted in this picture. The facade of the building in the background is different both in this copy and the engraving to the in the original. The picture is a good example of a ‘fête gallante' in an actual place. |
