Description The two musicians in this painting play 16th century viols. These predecessors of the violin have six strings and a flat back, and are played with a curved bow, often resting on the musician's leg. One plays a viola da gamba, the other a viola da braccio. Musicians in a Landscape has been attributed to Giorgione, Domenico Campagnola and Romanino. Recently the work's attribution has been changed to Giovanni da Asola (active 1512-1531). Little is known about this artist, also known as Giovanni da Asola, who arrived in Venice from his native town, Asola, around 1512. So far as is known he remained active up till 1531. His son Bernardino was also a painter and there is some uncertainty about attributions to either father or son. There are resemblances between the figures in Resurrection, attributed to Giovanni da Asola and dated 1516 (San Francesco della Vigna, Venice) and the musicians in the Glasgow painting which Humfrey (2004) tentatively dates to the same year.
