Description The poor condition of this work with extensive abrasion to the paint layer resulting in great loss of detail makes it difficult to assess. A long time attribution to Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788) was changed into 18th century Venetian by Buchanan in 1970. However, the style of the work seems closer to 18th century Neapolitan landscape painting in the tradition of Leonardo Coccorante and Salvatore Rosa, and e.g. Carlo Bonavia (active Naples 1751-1788). Bonavia's work comprises many idealised landscapes and capricci; imaginary landscapes featuring existing ruins or other landmarks in the Naples region, and shows similarities with the Glasgow Italian Landscape.
