Description This mountainous landscape bathed in warm sunlight is inspired by the Italian countryside. It features a picturesque group of travellers, with horse and donkeys, moving along a path under large trees in the right foreground. Although bearing the inscriptions ‘JB' and ‘JA Both fet', this sunlit view is not considered to be by Jan Both - the signatures are later additions. The picture bears similarities to the two known signed paintings by Cornelis van Swanenburgh (Centraal Museum, Utrecht).

Notes Attribution: Entered the collection in 1960 as by Jan Both. However, the signatures are additions. The picture was attributed to Swanenburgh by Nieuwstraten (letter, 24 March 1971 in gallery file). The attribution is based on the treatment of the staffage, foliage, curves in the landscape and the sky.
