| Description | The subject recalls Vernet's paintings of Napoleonic military victories. However, here the viewpoint is low, the artist focussing on the movement of figures and horses rather than providing a topographical view of the battlefield. In the centre, Napoleon on his white horse orders the imperial guard to charge. Cavalry behind moves forward. On the far horizon the battle rages against clouds of dark smoke and fire. The broken brushwork reveals the influence of Fortuny (‘the Spanish Meissonier') and of Impressionism, of which Domingo gained direct knowledge whilst living in Paris from 1875. | |
