| Description | In the mid-1760s Gainsborough made a full size copy of Anthony Van Dyck's double portrait of the brothers Lords John and Bernard Stuart (about 1638), then in the Darnley collection at Cobham Hall in Kent and now in the National Gallery, London. This smaller head and shoulder copy of the younger brother from the same painting, was made around the same time. It was not sold by the artist and was probably intended for his own study. Although faithful in composition to Van Dyck's original, it is a partial copy with muted colours, focussing on the effects of light on the face and clothing of its subject. | |
