| Description | This type of animated landscape was highly popular in Flanders in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Earlier artists such as Jan 'Velvet' Brueghel had established a market for intricate landscapes animated with lively scenes of everyday life. Although later in style, the woodland setting and detailed animation of this rural village scene were clearly influenced by his paintings. In the background the distinctly Flemish buildings emerge from among the trees and villagers with their horses, carts and livestock travel back and forth. To the left of the foreground is a wheelwright's workshop which acts as a focus for the activity. | |
