| Description | The London road recedes into the middle-ground, directing the eye into this view of Hastings. On either side hills rise up, framing the view of the sea in the middle distance. The painting reflects a growing interest in depicting local landscapes at the beginning of the nineteenth century that can also be seen in the works of English artists such as Constable and Gainsborough. |
