Description This rather enigmatic scene is taken from the central lower section of Titian's famous Presentation of the Virgin (1534-39; Accademia, Venice). The original tells the story from The Golden Legend of how the three-year-old Mary ascended the steps of the Temple in Jerusalem to begin her service there until her betrothal to Joseph. She is watched by a crowd of figures, some symbolical, some portraits. The little girl with her hand on the steps, for example, is said to be Titian's own daughter. This partial copy does not include the figure of the Virgin herself higher up the stairs, or the priests waiting to welcome her.
