| Description | Eglon Hendrik van der Neer studied under his father, and served as a painter to various noble courts. His technique is characterised by a smooth, seemingly brushless technique, characteristic of the school of Leiden 'fine' painters, ter Borch, Gerrit Dou and Van Mieris. Van der Neer's ladies are often shown reading, proffering food or playing musical instruments. In the 1670s he painted a series of female lute players. This painting also shows similarities to the work of Netscher. | |
