| Description | This scene is comparable to Farmhouse beside a Canal (1652; private collection), and A Cottage among Trees on the Bank of a Stream (1669; National Gallery, London), which is painted in the manner of Ruisdael. Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker was active in Haarlem by 1643 and there are a number of signed pictures from 1649 onwards. He was principally a landscape painter in the style of Jacob van Ruisdael, but he also imitated Philip Wouwermans and Jan Wijnants and painted a number of peasant scenes. Decker concentrated on rural dwellings and took special care to render the structure of the roofing, whether tiled or thatched, and brick walls or plank sidings. He also painted interiors of weavers' workshops. | |
