Description In this large painting an angel can be seen leading Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to safety in Egypt, away from the murderous King Herod. Gregorio de Ferrari was a Baroque painter, and this painting typifies his usual style. Rich colours and strong chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) increase the dramatic and emotional impact of the work.
