| Description |
Christian Sell was a painter of battle scenes and military subjects in general. Here he depicts a scene from the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) in which a group of drunken German soldiers are confronted by members of the Swedish army in a tavern. The artist chooses to paint the moment of discovery and the various responses, or indeed lack of response, of the inebriated German soldiers rather than an actual scrimmage. |
