Description This painting combines figures in a setting of classical ruins in the manner of Panini. This type of picture had become popular in the first half of the eighteenth century. During the eighteenth century, young gentry, particularly from Britain, toured Italy to see works of art and ancient ruins. Capricci (imaginary scenes) such as this painting were popular souvenirs of the Grand Tour.
