| Description |
This portrait of Field Marshal James Keith (1696-1758) was painted in Paris in 1724 by the French court painter Alexis-Simon Belle (1674-1734). Keith is shown in armour, and holds a marshal's baton in his right hand that he rests on his helmet, reminding the viewer of his skill as a solider and leader. A Jacobite, he was exiled for fighting the Hanoverians and spent the rest of his life on the continent, serving in foreign armies. He was a favourite of Frederick the Great of Prussia, who made him a marshal. |
